You don't know me
It was 25 degrees Fahrenheit outside as I walked my daughters to their swim lessons in Center City Philly.
Naturally, I was wearing my FWH shorts. I’m a shorts-year-round type of guy.
As we walked past a dry cleaner, a man stopped working on its exterior, looked me dead in the eyes, and said:
“You wouldn’t wear those if you had to work outside like me.”
He leered and pointed at my shorts.
I smiled at him and kept walking by, gently holding my daughters’ hands…
But, inside my mind, a phrase repeated like a ticking grandfather clock:
“You don’t know me, dude.”
My mind didn’t scream it in a Goggin’s “you don’t know me, son!!!” way…
But in a very matter-of-fact, unbothered, even tone.
“Daddy, what was that man talking about?” asked my youngest.
“Himself. Not me.”
I tell you this story because I want to start your week with a very important reminder:
When people tell you that you can’t, you won’t, or you aren’t, they aren’t talking about you.
They’re talking about themselves.
They’re projecting their limiting beliefs on you. What they say has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.
They don’t know you. They don’t know what you’re made of, what you’ve been through, and what you’re prepared to do about it.
So this week, don’t listen to them.
Keep your head high, focus on your why, and DO YOU.
Stay on your hunt, and remember:
Limits are lies, especially when others label you with theirs.
Talk soon,
Joey
P.S.
I’m not a hard-ass. I wear shorts year-round for a specific reason. More on that in my next post.
